Key Stage 1

At KS1, the children will be encouraged to:

  • Control sounds through singing and playing – performing skills
Children will learn to use their voices expressively, and differentiate between singing, speaking, whispering and “thinking” voices. They will learn to feel the pulse and use their bodies to move to music.  Children will sing with confidence and use instruments where appropriate.
  • Create and develop musical ideas
As music skills are gained and basic musicianship is achieved, children will improvise through melodic phrase and structure working with the symmetry of higher/lower, faster/slower, louder/quieter as comparatives.
  • Respond and review – appraising skills
Children will explore and express their ideas and feelings about music through performing, improvising and discussion.
  • Listen, and apply knowledge and understanding
At this stage, children explore their world of music and discover the delights of participation. Experiencing and memorising a repertoire of songs and games is fundamental to any subsequent music development. Thus, repertoire becomes the databank upon which a progression of learning and a deeper understanding of music becomes possible.
