Singing Steps Workshop Programmes

Singing Steps is a short workshop programme designed to be a fun, informal and highly participatory introduction to the aural/vocal approach to singing, which:

  • is open to the ENTIRE school community – class teachers, teaching assistants, non-teaching staff, parents and governors
  • is designed to support the development of singing in primary schools by introducing key techniques and ideas for non-specialists to use in classrooms
  • is led by The Voices Foundation’s team of highly trained Advisory Teachers based across the country
  • includes a demonstration lesson with a class from the school, to give “hands-on” insight into teaching a song and developing the aural skills needed for good singing
  • features two workshop sessions - which can be held consecutively or on separate days - focussing on:

    - finding the singing voice – the techniques involved
    - teaching a song – the techniques involved
    - aural development through use of the singing voice
    - introducing ‘Sing Up!’ songs
    - building a song repertoire to support singing in the early stages
    - early vocal development issues
    - working in parts

  • offers a follow-up visit from the Advisory Teacher to provide guidance and support for individual teachers and the Music Curriculum Leader

Singing Steps is currently no longer available free of charge to schools as part of Raising Voices, the menu of training opportunities offered through Sing Up, the Music Manifesto's National Singing Programme. However, it is possible to take one, two or all three elements of the programme on a paid-for basis.
